A credit union is a not-for-profit financial institution that accepts deposits, make loans, and provides a wide variety of other financial services and products. Credit unions operate to promote the well-being of their members. Profits made by credit unions are returned to members in the form of reduced fees, higher savings rates, and lower loan rates.
Credit unions are owned and controlled by the people, or members, who use their services. Each credit union member owns one “share” of the organization. Since each member is also an owner, they are entitled to vote on important issues, such as the election of the board of directors. The volunteer board of directors is elected by members to manage a credit union.
The purpose of a credit union is to encourage members to save money by providing financial services at competitive and fair rates. Credit unions are not-for-profit, meaning they do not pay profits to stockholders. Rather, any profits are paid back to the members in form of lower rates for loans and higher dividends on savings.
